Bubble cap trays are generally used when minimal leakage is allowed. They are also used for low liquid loads and have a very high turndown ratio.
Inside the bubble cap tray, caps have a high turn-down ratio and are commonly used for low liquid loads.
The bubble cap trays have many holes or bubble caps in them to allow the vapor to pass through. It increases the contact time between the vapor and the liquids in the column and helps to collect liquids that form at various heights in the column.
It is one of the devices in large-diameter fractional distillation columns that are designed to produce a bubbling action to exchange the vapor bubbles flowing up the column.
